Method 1: Use the Official Cummins Online System
Step 1: Find the Engine Data Plate
Every Cummins engine has a metal data plate fixed to the engine block.
This plate contains your Engine Serial Number (ESN) — the key information used to identify every part of your engine.
- The data plate is usually located on the side of the engine block, on top of the rocker cover, or near the high-pressure fuel pump.
- Record the Engine Serial Number (ESN) — this is the unique identifier (ESN = Engine Serial Number, typically 7–8 digits).
It may also appear as “Engine No.” or “Serial No.” printed at the top of the plate. - The data plate also includes information such as Engine Model and CPL (Control Parts List).

Step 2: Visit the Official Parts Website
- Go to the official Cummins parts website: https://parts.cummins.com
- On the homepage, select “Find Parts by Engine Serial Number”
- Enter your ESN, then click “Search” to view detailed parts information.

Step 3: Locate the Cylinder Head Section
The system will display an exploded view of your engine, along with all associated component part numbers, including:
- Cylinder Head Assembly
- Valve Guide / Seat / Gasket, etc.
- Corresponding Part Number and Supersession (replacement number)
- Record the Part Number — this is the official number required when ordering your replacement cylinder head.

Method 2: Find the Stamped Number on the Cylinder Head
If your engine data plate is worn or unreadable, you can find the part number directly on the cylinder head.
Step 1: Prepare for Inspection
- Make sure the engine is cooled down and safe to handle.
- Clean the cylinder head surface to remove oil and debris.
Step 2: Check These Common Areas
Look for engraved or cast numbers in these typical spots:
- Under the valve cover, on the flat metal surface near the rocker arm area.
- On the intake manifold side or exhaust manifold side.
- At the end of the cylinder head, near bolt areas.
- On the flat surface near injector ports or coolant passages.

Step 3: Distinguish Between Casting Number and Part Number
| Item | English | Characteristics |
| Casting Number | Casting Number | Raised or embossed into the metal; large font; used for factory tracking; not the part number. |
| Part Number | Part Number | Stamped or laser-etched; smaller characters; used for ordering; the official unique identifier. |

Method 3: Confirm with an Authorized Cummins Dealer
If the data plate is missing or the number on the cylinder head is unclear:
- Take clear photos of both the engine data plate and the entire cylinder head.
- Provide your Engine Serial Number (ESN) to an authorized Cummins Service Center.
- A technician can help confirm the exact part number through Cummins’ internal database.
FAQ
Q: Is the cylinder head part number the same as the engine number?
A: No. The cylinder head is a component of the engine, and each component has its own unique part number.
Q: Can I order parts directly using the casting number?
A: No. The casting number is only for manufacturing reference. You must cross-check it to get the correct part number.
