If you are familiar with trucks, heavy machinery, and/or generators, you might have heard discussions surrounding the renowned 12-Valve Cummins. It is an enduring and dependable engine that has been used for several decades, powering various farm equipment and pickup trucks.
One question that comes to mind is: What is the actual weight of a 12-Valve Cummins engine? Is weight a critical factor to consider when purchasing or replacing one?
Let us analyze this further.
Which Engine Models Are 12 Valve Cummins Series?
You’ll hear folks mention the “12-Valve Cummins,” and they mean the Cummins 5.9L inline-six mechanical diesel, also known as the 6BT series.
The “12-Valve” label comes from the engine having two valves per cylinder, and with six cylinders, you end up with twelve. Most versions come with the tough P7100 mechanical injection pump, although a few early units use the VE pump.
These engines have a rep for being straightforward, dependable, and easy to fix. That’s why people still want them long after they rolled off the factory floor.

How Much Does a 12-Valve Cummins Weigh?

A stock 12-valve Cummins 5.9L engine usually weighs between 450 and 500 kg (990 to 1,100 lbs) when it’s dry.
“Dry weight” just means the engine has no fluids in it—no coolant, no oil—and it usually skips the alternator and starter.
Why the difference in numbers?
- Engines with a turbo and intercooler tip the scales toward the upper end, landing near 500 kg.
- Non-intercooled setups come in a little lighter, around 480 kg.
Here’s a quick weight chart for common models:
| Series | Engine Model | Weight (Dry) |
| Power | Cummins 6BT5.9-P160 | 480 kg |
| Cummins 6BT5.9-P130 | 480 kg | |
| Cummins 6BTAA5.9-P180 | 500 kg | |

How to Choose the Right 12-Valve Cummins (by Weight)
Weight isn’t always first on the list when you’re choosing an engine, but it plays a bigger role than you might think:
- Vehicle or Equipment Balance: An engine that’s too heavy up front can throw off how a truck handles or make a boat less stable on the water.
- Mounting and Frame Stress: Check that your frame and mounting points can take the extra pounds without needing extra bracing.
- Transport and Shipping: Shipping costs often go up with weight. A 500 kg unit costs a lot more to move than a 450 kg one, especially on international routes.
- Lifting and Installation: Heavier engines may require bigger cranes or more forklifts to install, which adds to shop time and costs.
Quick Tips:
- For light-duty truck engine swaps, aim for non-intercooled engines around 480 kg.
- For heavy-duty rigs or serious power builds, choose aftercooled or turbocharged models around 500 kg—they give you more bang for the weight.
- Buying from abroad? Always get the confirmed dry weight in the sales contract to flatten shipping surprises.
